That time the Tooth Fairy traveled up the mountain…

Sam told me he doesn’t believe in the Tooth Fairy.

Except he still wants her to bring him money.

Silly boy.

She had to make quite the trek in the snow and wind yesterday to deliver a single dollar to the toothless wonder.

He lost it playing in the snow on the giant deck.

Here are a few more pictures of the kids playing on the deck… it’s a huge deck and it was covered with probably eight inches of snow at one point. We were loving being able to send the kids out there with no worries of anyone escaping.

Then we let them play out front for a while too. You can see the gravel and other bare spots because the wind was gusting at over 25 miles per hour at one point and actually blew it all away. Crazy!

Tim said today that he was sorry I wasn’t somewhere warm and tropical for vacation, but I wouldn’t trade this week for anything. It’s been two years since we’ve seen snow like this, and I have missed being able to ride around and gawk at the beautiful snow-covered scenery. And the time we are having with our friends is priceless.

We did finally venture down the mountain today into Valle Crucis and Blowing Rock. Tomorrow we are going to have brunch with even more old friends from Raleigh, and we are all very excited about that.

Spring Break Snow Squall

Today is our first day of Spring break… well, it’s actually Sam’s Spring break, we’re just along for the ride. Last year we did not plan anything for his break, and while it was nice to have a week off, it was also kind of boring. This year we decided we would go somewhere as a family and have a vacation somewhere warm.

Except “warm” didn’t exactly work out, so we decided to take the week to catch up with some of our favorite people in the mountains of NC.

We wound our way up to the top of some mountain in between Banner Elk and Valle Crucis yesterday just before the snow came. Our sweet friends from Raleigh are coming today, and we are praying they make it up here safely.

This really is our kind of vacation… nowhere to be, nothing to do except hang out and enjoy each other’s company. Tim and Sam have been tying flies and are now locked in a fierce battle of Mario Kart. Charlotte spent the morning playing with her horses and goofing off before passing out in one of the recliners upstairs.

I have been reading, taking some pictures and enjoying the fact that I don’t have to clean anything but the breakfast dishes.

The house where we are staying is just unbelievable. It’s a relatively new home, but it feels so cozy and rustic with wood everywhere and gorgeous views out every window. The house is built onto the side of the mountain, so it’s quite amazing to look out over the mountains and see so many tree tops below you.

We were expecting to see some snow, and day one has provided plenty. We’ve even seen a few snow squalls, which are fine when you’re safely indoors, but not so much if you’re on the road.

I hope to catch up on some reading and writing this week. I’ll be sure to check in with more pictures soon.

Have a great week!

I had to log in.

Yes, I have been away from my blog for so long that I had to log in again. Thank goodness I remembered my password.

Here is a recap from the last month:

School ended little snow went to SC visited family celebrated Christmas ate at The Farmer’s Table caught up with more family gonna be an aunt again saw my besties at the Cracker Barrel said goodbye came home cleaned house had a soup party watched a lot of football and some Pack basketball sent the kids back to school undecorated and there’s not enough coffee.

I have sat down and started so many posts, but I didn’t finish them (obviously). I do have a new series in the works for you, thus the new blog header. I also start my speaking class this Friday (yay!).

I have some cleaning to do, but I couldn’t let the blog go one more day unattended. Here are some pictures to repay you for your trouble…

Love ya! Mean it!

Sweet Saturday

We slept in this morning.

The past two weekends we had races to get to and family to entertain. We enjoyed every minute of all the craziness, but it was nice to not have to be anywhere this morning. The most pressing item on the agenda was getting the dog out for his walk.

Now Tim is downstairs watching a fly fishing movie with the kids (no, not the one with Brad Pitt, so what’s the point?) and later we will be heading out to enjoy this beautiful day.

I can’t help but think about seven years ago, when I was nine months pregnant and so ready to have my baby. Tim was in no hurry, wanting to cram in as much sleep as possible, but I wasn’t sleeping well at all and just wanted to move on. We had no idea what to expect, but we knew we had plenty of people there to guide us and help out.

I know many of you are still waiting to have your baby. I hope Libby’s story encouraged you a little yesterday. Don’t forget to go leave a comment there to win one of her lovely pieces of jewelry.

Now go on, your Saturday is waiting!

Monday Morning Links

Hi friends… yes, it has been over a week since I posted here! I anticipated last week would be packed, and I was correct; it was our first full week of everything, and while I was not crazy-busy, I did have to evaluate the schedule and prioritize accordingly.

Alas, writing fell nearly to the bottom, just above a hair cut and Top Chef Masters.

I did make time for reading (and watching), and I want to share some of my favorite links from the week with you.

This Francis Chan video could seriously change. your. life. It’s four minutes long, and don’t tell me you don’t have four minutes; you do.

Last week an author launching a new book asked people to write letters to their teenage selves. Some of my favorites are here, here and here.

Last week was also week two of Compassion Blogging Month. I am most disappointed in myself for not at least getting that blog post written, but I am happy to say that at the halfway point 1,515 kids have been sponsored. Amazing! Now there are 1,593 more to go. Here is a great blog for reading more about Compassion. Michelle is a wonderful resource for those of you who already sponsor kids but maybe don’t always know how to write or what to send.

Last week was full of fun things; my first time at MOPS, Charlotte’s first day of dance class, Sam’s first week of fall baseball practice… and Tim’s 35th birthday. We had pizza and chocolate chess pie and a fierce game of Battleship (Charlotte and I let the boys win!)

I pray your Monday is full of joy.

{Phone} Photos Lately

Theses are some pictures I took while we were downtown Sunday:

Opening Day 2012

Saturday was opening day for the Frederick American Little League.

Y’all, it was awesome.

The coach is really handsome!

My baby boy is doing machine pitch this year, and even though the fast balls scare the bejeezus out of me, I am so excited for him.

After the opening ceremonies Sam’s team {sponsored by Frederick Cat Vet} scrimmaged with two other teams. All the kids got to hit and Sam did great.

After the game I had to work the hot dog stand for a bit and the kids got their faces painted. Sam insisted I get some pictures.

Anticipation

Tim came home from work early on Thursday to start a long weekend so that we could at least pretend Sam had a real spring break.

The kids camped out by the window so that they could see Dad pull in…

Duke was excited, too!

And like almost every day, Charlotte ran for her favorite hiding spot so Dad could try and find her.

In the Oven

I don’t usually cook a meal on Saturdays; we usually heat up leftovers or make something easy like spaghetti with jarred sauce. But I roasted a chicken yesterday, and it needed someplace to go. I had pinned* this recipe last week and it is bubbling away right now. The house smells so delicious, and I think it will be the perfect meal for a chilly February evening.

And I probably have my hopes up, but I daresay this could be a dish even my kids will love.

*You can find all my pins on my Pinterest page. If you are not already on Pinterest and would like an invite, let me know!

Later that same day…
